How do you calculate the square footage of a room?

Measure the room's length and width in feet and multiply them — a 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 square feet — and when the room is not a plain rectangle, split it into rectangles, triangles, and part-circles, calculate each piece, and add the results.
Start with the tape measure, not the formula
The arithmetic is the easy part; the measurement is where room square-footage goes wrong. Measure each dimension at floor level along the longest run of the wall, and convert inches to decimal feet before multiplying: 3 inches is 0.25 ft, 6 inches is 0.5 ft, 9 inches is 0.75 ft, and any other inch count is simply inches ÷ 12. A room that tapes at 12 ft 6 in by 11 ft 3 in is 12.5 × 11.25 = 140.63 square feet by this site's engine.
Skipping the conversion and rounding to whole feet is the most common error, and it is not a small one. Rounding that same room down to 12 × 11 ft gives 132 square feet — 8.63 square feet short, which on a flooring purchase is most of a box of planks. Round to the nearest inch, carry decimals through the math, and let the final result be the only thing you round.
The three formulas that cover almost every room
A rectangle is length × width — the workhorse. A circle is computed from its diameter, the measurement you can actually take across a round space: area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)², so a 10-ft-diameter circle is 78.54 square feet and a 12-ft round rug footprint is 113.1. A triangle is ½ × base × height — an 8-ft base with a 5-ft height is 20 square feet — where the height is the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite point, never the length of a slanted side.

A U-shaped room is three pieces — an 18 × 12 ft center with two 8 × 6 ft wings totals 216 + 48 + 48 = 312 square feet. Every sum here is the engine's running-total output, not separate hand math.
Mixed shapes work the same way. A 15.5 × 12 ft living room with a bay that projects a triangular nook — 6 ft wide at the wall, 2 ft deep at its point — is 186 square feet of rectangle plus 6 square feet of triangle, 192 in total. The discipline that keeps this accurate is drawing the floor plan first: sketch the room, slice it into shapes at the corners, label each measurement, and check that every slice of floor belongs to exactly one shape — no gaps, no double counting.
Room math is not the same as a house's square footage
The room-by-room interior measurements this calculator handles are the right basis for buying flooring or paint, but they will not match the square footage in a real-estate listing. Homes in the United States are commonly measured under ANSI Z765 — the standard maintained by Home Innovation Research Labs, currently in its 2021 edition — which calculates a house's finished area to the exterior finished surface of the outside walls, so wall thickness itself is counted.
The standard also draws lines a tape measure inside one room never sees: areas must be finished to count, above-grade and below-grade finished areas are reported separately, and openings like stairwells are handled by rule. The practical takeaway is to use the right number for the job — interior room measurements for materials, the ANSI-style figure for comparing homes — and not to be surprised when the two disagree by 5–10% on the same house.
Turning area into a materials number
Square footage is rarely the end goal; it is the input to a purchase. The flooring view of this calculator adds a waste factor for cuts and breakage and prices the result: the 144-square-foot L-shaped room above, at a quoted $4.50 per square foot with the standard 10% waste factor, means buying 158.4 square feet of material for $712.80.
